Leaf ing the city #2

Leaf ing the city #2
Observation point: City Map
Zoom I: Street lines
Zoom II: Buildings
Centralized zoom III: Leaves
There is a deep and detailed observation taking place in two different ground plans, which both hold a similar “layout”; that is, the city and the plants. Having as a starting point an overall city view, the map here features three different zoom stages: a zoom into street lines and city blocks at the first stage. At stage two the buildings, while stage three is the most centralized zoom- the leaves. It enables us to look into and explore using our senses, sometimes by using our own eyes, or even with our own body. A final objective of this procedure is to observe the linear resemblance between mater and nature. A new experience is always “carved” after each and single route at the urban spaces.
The artist, Maria Andrikopoulou, is acting here as a “Botanist of the sidewalk”(1); she wanders around the city, following varied routes. By this way, she allows the element of randomness to be revealed. That is, “new decays” found at the buildings and plants, both inhabitants of this urban space. She attempts to collect and write down their fragments. Then everything is transferred at its new exhibition environment, which is like a modern, urban archaeological findings place; Leaf ing the City presents a re-aestheticisation of decay allowed by the interaction between the artist and the city.
The composition “Urban Herbarium” is displayed. A thorough and effective procedure of gathering plant leaves that the artist finds on her urban walks – some of them are in great condition, while others are infested. She collects plants, which are city “residents”, and studies their decay; then she complements it with her drawing, alluding to the “cabinets of curiosities”(2). Her method is to collect, record, study and present ordinary but still “curious” plants and their decay.
Andrikopoulou’s installation “Reconstruction” places all the urban constructional pieces she has discovered on top of a map. She gathers all the hints, such as wall coating and constructing materials, which each building “leaves behind”; then she analyzes urban fragments in a drawing form with a mpa background. This provides enough material to the audience, so that they can “reconstruct” an imaginary urban space, leaving aside the decay and temporariness of material.
It takes only one alteration of the usual walk around the city to be lead to the core observation of universal truths, that was once taken for granted. Leaves and plasters, being trees’ and buildings’ “manes”, are some of the elements around the world, which stand motionless; the decay, provoked by time, weather conditions and human, “climbs” gradually on them. At Leaf ing the city exhibition, Maria Andrikopoulou, tries to pass on her discoveries on disease and rejuvenate the decay through her drawing.
An ode to decay; towards a “leaf ing” of the urban scenery.

(1) Charles Baudlaire conceives as an era flaneur the “Botanist of the Sidewalk”. A persona that is wandering around the city, while paying attention to urban scenery details and elaborates on them. He takes part on this actively and transmits this experience in artistic ways.
(2) “Showcases – rooms of remarkable objects”. The need for knowledge has led to the need for collection. Thus, in the 16th century, the noblemen of the period created the first museums in the form of showrooms and later in rooms, where they placed curious objects – “loot” from their travels (animal, plant objects and human remains). These collections can also be seen as a microcosm of the universe.
